What features does a wheelchair-accessible porta potty have?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty has a floor at ground level with no step, a door about 36 inches clear, grab bars beside and behind the toilet, and enough open floor for a 60-inch turning circle. The unit measures about 7.5 feet wide, 7.5 feet deep and 7.5 feet high.

We call this unit “wheelchair-accessible.” Manufacturers design these units to meet ADA turning-space guidelines, but whether a whole site meets the ADA also depends on paths, slopes and placement, which the event host controls.

How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, require at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than 1. A cluster of 10 units needs 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 units needs 2. Confirm local rules with your permit office or venue.

Read the standard at the U.S. Access Board (ADA §213). This is the legal minimum; we recommend at least 1 accessible unit at any public event even if the cluster is small. Our sizing calculator adds the accessible count automatically.

Where should a wheelchair-accessible unit be placed?

A wheelchair-accessible unit should sit on firm, level ground such as pavement, packed gravel or plywood, with a smooth path to the door at least 36 inches wide. Grass that turns soft after rain stops a wheelchair, so place the unit near the accessible parking or the main walkway.

  • Keep the door facing the path, not a fence or tent wall.
  • Avoid slopes; the unit must sit level to keep the door working.
  • The service truck still needs to reach within about 15 feet.

See the placement checklist for more.

How much does a handicap porta potty rental cost?

A handicap porta potty rental costs an estimated $275–$375 for a weekend event with delivery and pickup included. A long-term accessible unit costs an estimated $250–$350 per 28-day cycle with weekly service. The larger unit takes more truck space, so it costs more than a standard unit.

Full line-by-line costs are in the rental cost guide.

Questions renters ask

Do I need an ADA porta potty for a private backyard party?

A private party at a home usually has no legal requirement. If any guest uses a wheelchair or walker, rent 1 accessible unit; the wide door and grab bars help older guests too.

Can I rent one handicap unit and one regular unit?

Mixing 1 accessible unit with standard units is common. Both can be delivered on the same trip, so the delivery fee covers both.

Is the accessible unit good for a construction site?

The accessible unit works on job sites where a worker needs it or where the public uses the toilet, like park projects. It needs more level space than a standard unit.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

Most accessible units do not include a sink. Add a hand-washing station placed on the same level path.
