When do homeowners rent a porta potty?
Homeowners rent a porta potty when the water or sewer is shut off for a repair, during a bathroom or kitchen remodel, when a roofing or siding crew is working for several days, when building a new house or living in a camper on land, and for family gatherings like reunions or funerals.
Roofers and remodelers often ask the homeowner to provide the toilet. A unit on your driveway keeps crews out of your house.
Where does a porta potty go at a house?
At a house, a porta potty goes on the driveway, a side yard next to the driveway, or the curb strip, on level ground within about 15 feet of where the truck parks. The unit should not go in a fenced backyard, because the service hose must reach the unit every week.
- Keep it at least 10 ft from windows and doors to limit odor.
- Rowhomes in the West Ward and South Side: the curb or rear alley usually works; ask about a street permit if it sits on the street.
- College Hill driveways are steep; the unit needs a flat pad.
Use the placement checklist.
How is a short home rental billed?
A short home rental is billed as one 28-day cycle, so a 3-day plumbing repair costs the same as 4 weeks. A standard unit runs an estimated $165–$250 per cycle plus first-cycle delivery. For a single-day party, an event rental with Friday delivery and Monday pickup is usually cheaper.

Questions renters ask
Our sewer line collapsed. Can we get one for the family today?
Call (610) 229-3331 before 11 a.m. and a unit can usually arrive today. A deluxe unit with a sink is more comfortable for kids and older family members.
Will the truck damage my driveway or lawn?
The truck stays on pavement or gravel and does not drive on lawns. We are not responsible for pavers or landscaping the unit must cross, so pick a spot near the drive.
Can you pump out a regular toilet in my house?
Ernest Rental Works does not service house toilets or septic systems. A plumber or septic company handles those.
What if the neighbors use it?
Add your own padlock to the door hasp. Most units have a hasp for this.
