How many porta potties do I need for 100 guests?
A 100-guest event up to 6 hours needs 2 standard porta potties. A 100-guest event with alcohol needs 3 porta potties: 2 from the chart plus 1 because alcohol is served. A 100-guest event that runs 6–8 hours also needs 3. Add 1 hand-wash station when food is served.
| Guests | Up to 6 hours | 6–8 hours | Over 8 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 3 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 6 |

| 300 | 6 | 8 | 10 |
| 400 | 8 | 10 | 12 |
| 500 | 10 | 13 | 16 |
| 1,000 | 20 | 25 | 30 |
How do I adjust the count for alcohol, long events and food?
Start with the chart number, then add 1 unit for every 4 units when alcohol is served, with a minimum of 1. Add 1 hand-wash station for every 4 toilets when food is served. Make at least 1 unit, or 5% of each cluster, wheelchair-accessible. Every step is a whole number.
Worked example: 150-guest wedding, 5 hours, open bar
- Chart: 150 ÷ 50 = 3 units.
- Under 6 hours: no time add.
- Alcohol: 3 units ÷ 4, rounded up = add 1 → 4 units.
- Accessible: 5% of 4 = 0.2, rounded up = 1 of the 4 is wheelchair-accessible.
- Food: 4 toilets ÷ 4 = 1 hand-wash station.
Result: 3 deluxe or standard units + 1 wheelchair-accessible unit + 1 hand-wash station, or a 3-stall restroom trailer plus 1 accessible unit.
Source of the method: the industry rule of 1 unit per 50 guests for an event up to about 6 hours, with Ernest Rental Works whole-unit adds. Accessible counts follow the 2010 ADA Standards §213.2. Your venue or permit office may require more.
How many porta potties does a construction crew need?
OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c) Table D-1 requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers for 20 or more, and 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers for 200 or more. Our recommendation with weekly service is 1 unit per 10 workers.
Read OSHA 1926.51. The legal minimum is the floor; our recommendation keeps units usable between weekly visits. See construction porta potty rental.
How many porta potties does a farm crew need?
OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110 requires 1 toilet and 1 hand-washing facility for every 20 field workers, placed within a quarter-mile walk of where they work. A 45-worker harvest crew needs 3 toilets and 3 hand-washing facilities. Crews of 10 or fewer working 3 hours or less a day are exempt.
Read OSHA 1928.110 field sanitation. Towable units are handy for fields; see long-term and seasonal rentals.
Questions renters ask
Will one porta potty be enough for 30 people?
One unit is enough for 30 guests over 4–6 hours. Add a second if alcohol is served or the party runs past 6 hours.
How many hand-washing stations should I get for a big event?
Plan 1 hand-wash station per 4 toilets when food is served. A festival with 12 toilets needs 3 stations.
How many restroom trailers for about 460 people at a shelter?
Around-the-clock use needs far more capacity than an event. For roughly 460 people, plan about 10 toilet seats with service at least daily, such as 3 four-stall trailers or a mix of trailers and standard units, plus hand-wash stations. Call to plan it with us.
Do I need more units if most guests are women?
Women use toilets longer than men use urinals. For a mostly female crowd, such as a bridal shower, add 1 unit to the chart count.
