Quick answerA graduation party needs 1 porta potty per 50 guests, plus at least 1 extra if you serve alcohol, so 80 guests over 5 hours with drinks need 3 units. Book 2 to 4 weeks ahead for May and June, when party weekends fill first.

How many porta potties do I need for a graduation party?

Start with 1 porta potty per 50 guests for a graduation party up to 6 hours, and round up. Add 1 unit for every 4 when you serve alcohol, with a minimum of 1 extra. Parties longer than 6 hours also get extra units. Most backyard graduation parties land at 1 to 3 units.

Our method also puts at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit in the mix. Run your own numbers with our porta potty calculator guide.

How many porta potties for 80 guests over 5 hours with drinks?

An 80-guest graduation party lasting 5 hours with drinks needs 3 porta potties. The math: 80 divided by 50 is 1.6, so round up to 2. Serving alcohol adds 1 more, for 3 total. Make 1 of the 3 a wheelchair-accessible unit, and add 1 hand-wash station because food is served.

  1. Base: 80 ÷ 50 = 1.6. Round up to 2 units.
  2. Length: 5 hours is under 6, so no extra units.
  3. Drinks: add 1 unit for every 4, minimum 1. Now 3 units.
  4. Access: make 1 of the 3 a wheelchair-accessible porta potty for grandparents, strollers and anyone using a walker.
  5. Hands: 1 hand-wash station per 4 toilets, minimum 1.

Open-house parties feel smaller, but the peak hour still matters. Lines form right after food comes out.

When should I book a porta potty for a graduation party?

Book a graduation party porta potty 2 to 4 weeks ahead for May and June. Those are the busiest party weekends of the year across the Lehigh Valley, since most area high schools and colleges graduate within a few weeks. Holiday weekends like Memorial Day fill first, so book those even earlier.

Booking early also gives you more choice of unit type and color. If plans change, cancellation is free 48 or more hours before delivery. If weather threatens your date, call us and we'll reschedule.

Wanting a restroom trailer instead? Trailers need about 7 days' notice at minimum, and more in peak season.

When is the graduation party porta potty delivered and picked up?

Graduation party porta potties are delivered Friday, or sometimes Thursday, and picked up Monday. There's no extra charge for the extra days. Delivery runs 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and the driver calls 30 to 60 minutes ahead. You don't need to be home if the spot is marked.

We're closed Sunday, so a Saturday or Sunday party still gets Monday pickup. That keeps trucks out of your driveway while guests are there.

Each unit arrives clean and stocked with toilet paper and deodorizer. There's no cleaning during the weekend unless you book it. See how weekend rentals run on our event porta potty rental page.

Where should the porta potty go in my backyard?

Put the porta potty on level ground within about 15 feet of your driveway or street, because our truck doesn't drive on lawns. Keep it about 20 feet from food tables and the tent, out of photo spots, and along a lit path so guests can find it after dark.

Good backyard spots:

  • The side of the driveway, near the garage.
  • A level corner of the front yard near the curb.
  • A gravel pad beside an alley, common on Easton rowhome blocks.

Our porta potty placement checklist covers slopes, gate codes and marking the spot.

Do I need a hand-wash station, or is hand sanitizer enough?

When food is served, we recommend 1 hand-wash station per 4 toilets, with a minimum of 1. A hand-wash station has a foot pump, 20 to 40 gallons of fresh water, soap and paper towels. For a short party with finger food, a hand sanitizer add-on inside each porta potty is a lighter option.

Three ways to handle hands:

Pink units are available on request if you want something other than blue or gray.

How do I keep the porta potty clean through the party?

Lock the porta potty Friday night with your own padlock on the door hasp, so it's fresh on party day. Add a spare roll of toilet paper, set a small trash can by the door, and check it once mid-party. An event unit is rated for roughly 200 uses before it needs service.

  • Unlock it an hour before guests arrive.
  • Put a battery light inside for evening parties.
  • Keep kids from playing with the door.
  • For 2-day parties, ask about a service visit between days.

Related questions

Is 1 porta potty enough for a 30-person graduation party?

For 30 guests over a few hours without much drinking, 1 standard unit is usually enough. Add a second if you're serving beer or the party runs past 6 hours.

Can you deliver Saturday morning and pick up Saturday night?

Weekend parties are delivered Friday and picked up Monday. That keeps trucks away during the party, and the extra days don't cost anything extra.

Do I need a permit for a porta potty at a backyard party?

A unit on your own property usually needs no permit. A unit on the street, a sidewalk or in a park may. Check with your city or township before booking a curbside spot.

What if it rains on party day?

Porta potties work fine in rain. If you change the party date, tell us at least 48 hours before delivery to change it free. For bad weather, call us and we'll reschedule.

Do you have porta potty colors other than blue?

We carry blue and gray units, and pink is available on request. Ask when you book, especially for May and June weekends.
